Repeated drying and rewetting differently affect abiotic and biotic soil phosphorus (P) dynamics in a sandy soil: A 33P soil incubation study

چکیده
Soil drying and rewetting (DRW) events are expected to occur at higher frequencies because of alterations in climate patterns. Readily extractable inorganic microbial soil phosphorus (P) pools may be affected due rapid changes water availability. We aimed determine how P dynamics by repeated DRW using a sandy grassland that regularly experiences DRW. In laboratory incubation study, the was exposed three cycles, with each cycle consisting two-day phase, three-day dryness phase four-day moist after rewetting. The indicators abiotic processes (P sorption) biotic (respiration, abundance, potential phosphatase enzyme activities) were determined together water-extractable P, resin-extractable 33P-labelled soil. During first cycle, reduced half accompanied concomitant but not equivalent increase slight as well delayed P. Thus, increases explained released during also occupying sorption sites, thereby decreasing sorption. Changes 33P-isotopic composition same time suggested microorganisms did respond homogenously treatment indicated an increased mineralisation previously unavailable organic compounds. However, second third only activities treatment, whereas all other parameters remained similar values constant treatment. effects on appeared affect more long-lastingly, most quickly adjusted conclude current concepts suggesting mobility towards environmental compartments should consider equally case short repetition incidences.

Does Soil Disturbance Affect Soil Phosphorus Fractions?
Increased turnover of organic matter as a result of soil disturbance (e.g. by soil tillage) is described in principle, but the direct influence of soil disturbance on soil P turnover especially for organic farming systems has not been sufficiently proven. The objective of the study was to evaluate the short term effect of soil disturbance on different soil P fractions in a soil shaking experime...
متن کاملBiotic and Abiotic Soil Properties Influence Survival of Listeria monocytogenes in Soil
Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the potentially fatal disease listeriosis and terrestrial ecosystems have been hypothesized to be its natural reservoir. Therefore, identifying the key edaphic factors that influence its survival in soil is critical. We measured the survival of L. monocytogenes in a set of 100 soil samples belonging to the French Soil Quality Monit...
متن کاملDrying of a model soil.
Drying experiments have been carried out with model soils made of different pastes filling granular packings. A detailed information concerning the time evolution of the water saturation distribution inside the sample was obtained from magnetic resonance imaging measurements. This study makes it possible to understand the physical origin of the drying characteristics of these materials. The dry...
متن کاملRelative Importance of Biotic and Abiotic Soil Components to Plant Growth and Insect Herbivore Population Dynamics
BACKGROUND Plants are affected by several aspects of the soil, which have the potential to exert cascading effects on the performance of herbivorous insects. The effects of biotic and abiotic soil characteristics have however mostly been investigated in isolation, leaving their relative importance largely unexplored. Such is the case for the dune grass Ammophila, whose decline under decreasing ...
متن کاملThe Conversion of Inorganic Phosphorus Fractions, Phosphatase Activity, and Some Biological Properties in Sandy Soil Enriched with Minerals, Organic Matter, and Microbial Modifiers under Two Months of Incubation
This study investigated the effect of the inoculation of the soil with some phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) on inorganic P fractions in sandy soil enriched with inorganic and organic amendments. A factorial experiment arrangement was performed in a completely randomized design with three replications, using two factors: microorganisms (control, Entrobacter cloacae, Brevundimonas, a...
